Holiday Stories

New Year's Day

January 1 marks the start of the Gregorian calendar year. In modern China it is a statutory holiday, often used for short trips, public countdowns and gatherings with family or friends.

Spring Festival (Chinese New Year)

The Spring Festival is China's most important traditional holiday and marks the start of the lunar new year. Families gather for reunion dinners, exchange red envelopes and decorate homes with red couplets.

Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu)

The Dragon Boat Festival is observed on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month and is associated with the poet Qu Yuan. Dragon boat racing and eating zongzi, glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, are its best-known traditions.

Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when families gather to admire the full moon and share mooncakes. The legend of Chang'e, the moon goddess, is central to the festival.

National Day (Golden Week)

National Day on October 1 marks the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. It begins a seven-day Golden Week and one of the busiest domestic travel periods of the year. Flag-raising ceremonies and public floral displays are common celebrations.
